I am Jacqueline Fernandez and I am writing this mail thanking all my supporters who joined me to help Rebuild Tamil Nadu by participating in Jacqueline Builds which took place in Padappai (Chennai) on 9th April 2016.
Thousands of people had been rendered homeless due to the incessant rains during the months of November and December, 2015 in Tamil Nadu. This unprecedented rainfall which has been the worst in the last 120 years has devastated normal lives and infrastructure causing immense losses to lives, assets, households and livelihood of the people.
I feel blessed that I received a lot of support from volunteers, donors and my film fraternity. I met lot of flood affected victims and I wish to share some stories with you. The families are moved by our gesture of helping them and on their behalf as well I am sending this Thank you note.
Here are stories of some families whom I met:
Sivagami lives in Padappai, her house where she used to reside prior to the floods got damaged she had to move in to her mother’s house with her husband and three children. To add to the misery she lost her vision since 2013 due to some medical negligence. Her daughter Pepsiba (16) desires to study to be a nurse after seeing all the villagers being completely tossed due to the recent floods. “The situation during the floods was unimaginable. We were devastated. It was difficult for me to look after the children and I was totally helpless. Today me and my family are thankful to Habitat for giving us a roof over our head”, says Sivagami.
“We lost everything in the floods - our home, property as well as our government identity cards. We had no identity left. I left my children at my brother’s house as I did not want their education to get affected. My husband and I made temporary arrangements and continued to live in a makeshift home in an unsafe environment surrounded by reptiles and insects. God heard our prayers in the form of Habitat and with the new home being built, we are hopeful of a better future.”
Kapagam Thyagarajan, resident of Padappai village.
