At Greenwood High, our students take their Yoga sessions very seriously. Following the spirit of the International Yoga Day, which was celebrated on June 21st on the campus, our students and their dads had a great time practicing basic yoga postures.
The objective of this initiative was to raise awareness and importance of healthy living and the implications of yoga in the daily routine of an individual. As the campaign had been clubbed with Father’s Day which was also on June 21st, our students invited their fathers to the campus as well. The objective was to teach different yoga postures to the fathers, as it is almost impossible for working parents to take time out from their busy schedules to practice yoga. So why not help the parents with some basic yoga postures on the occasion of International Yoga Day and also highlight the relations of fathers with their kids.
The true essence of yoga revolves around elevating the life force or ‘Kundalini’ at the base of the spine. It aims to achieve this through a series of physical and mental exercises. At the physical level, the methods comprise various yoga postures or ‘asanas’ that aim to keep the body healthy. The mental techniques include breathing exercises or ‘pranayama’ and meditation or ‘dhyana’ to discipline the mind.
The ultimate goal of yoga is, however, to help the individual to transcend the self and attain enlightenment. As the Bhagavad-Gita says, “A person is said to have achieved yoga, the union with the Self, when the perfectly disciplined mind gets freedom from all desires, and becomes absorbed in the Self alone.”
With media coverage and complete participation, we saw a number of happy faces receiving goodies from the school.
Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.
